THE SKY WAS CLOUDLESS
and of a deep dark blue
With a yawn the tomcat stretched himself out. His afternoon nap was over, it was time to get to work again. He was assigned to an evening territory patrol, which he would be leading as he was the oldest one of the group. The amount of patrols had been heightened, because of the threat that was BloodClan. It meant the groups would be smaller, but there would be more than usual. The largest groups were assigned to the borders, while he had received the task of just patrolling the territory with one other warrior, Cormorantwing. The black warrior emerged from the den, walking over to the entrance of the Camp. He sat down, his orange eyes scanning the environment while he was waiting for the other to join him.
The grey tom-cat had just walked into camp with a squirrel and a bird when it was about time for him to go onto his patrol. He put the prey with the rest of them, knowing it would feed at least a couple of cats if he was lucky. His stormy blue eyes raked over the camp site, knowing that his patrol would be soon with Blackbear, an tom-cat older than him. He hated going on patrols, they always wanted to talk and well, he wasn’t one to talk to. Ain’t no pansy ass, was what his brother would say to him. See, if there was a problem he wouldn’t talk, they would fight it out. Their family was known for that. Some cats had hope with the mentor he had assigned when he had been an apprentice, but his mentor was unfortunately for him one of his dad’s friends. So he had to suck it up and be a damn man about it. He had to work for his life and own it, otherwise they would beat you up without a doubt. That’s what he had learned. Unfortunately for him, his scars on his body told that story. Though no-one saw the small scars, hidden by his grey fur. He was glad about it, because hell, he didn’t want to talk about that. He sighed as he saw Blackbear emerge from the warrior den, gosh how much he wanted to be in that den. He had his nest in the far away corner, as much as away from the cats as possible. He rose to his feet again and walked towards the black tom-cat, before nodding to him as a greeting. There were no words needed, just go and watch. Nothing else to do about it.
When his gaze dwelled off to the left, he could see the familiair form of his patrol partner walking towards him. They weren’t necessarily friends, as they both tended to keep to themselves in the Camp. Avoiding a conversation would be harder when it was just the two of them, but he could guess the other would appreciate the effort as well. Because in the end, they were Clanmates. Both loyal to ShadowClan, or so he assumed, so working together for the same purpose gave them some sort of connection.
Cormorantwing arrived in silence, only nodding a greeting, which he mirrored respectfully. Even though he wasn’t much older, he took the lead while walking towards the exit. ”Let’s start with the area around the burnt sycamore”, He instructed, making it sound like an order that couldn’t be discussed. He was here to do his job thoroughly and therefore he expected Cormorantwing to follow his command without questioning his decisions.
He hated to go on patrols so bad. He didn’t mind following orders from cats he respected, but sometimes cats could get really bossy. And one thing he hated about cats was when they thought they could just order him around like some errant boy. Like it didn’t matter because he was so quiet and never seemed to have a specific opinion about a subject. And he didn’t care, honestly, but he swore, he was not going to be used as some damn errand boy. Blackbear nodded back to him, as he started to exit the camp. He followed quietly, because he didn’t see a reason to talk. While they walked close to each other he looked around for any signs of prey. Even though it wasn’t a hunting patrol, it would never be bad to bring back some prey, you know. And hunting was one of his qualities. ”Let’s start with the area around the burnt sycamore,” He looked sideways to the slightly older warrior and nodded calmly in response. ”’s long ‘s we get the job done.” he muttered shortly and soft. Just get the job done and go on with their tasks, that would be for the best.
The point of this patrol was to inspect the territory and look for signs of intruders. They weren’t really supposed to go after the scents, but he already knew that he wouldn’t be able to refrain from doing exactly that if the trails were fresh. If Cormorantwing had at least some courage in him, they could surely handle it by themselves, right? The other warrior agreed on the importance of their job, and how he was in charge for it. Therefore the black male hummed satisfied and made his way towards the earlier mentioned area.
With his mouth opened a bit and his nose close to the ground, he was scanning the environment for peculiar scents. Anything that was not prey or ShadowClan would alarm him immediately. Once they were near the burnt sycamore, he could vaguely distinguish the smell of the thunderpath. The wind was carrying those scents their way. Along with.. Was that a hint of ThunderClan in the air? Blackbear focused his orange gaze on his Clanmate, pointing in the direction of the scent with his tail. ”You smell that too?” He asked him. Because he might be older and more experienced, yet this patrol was carried out by two warriors, so he valued his opinion nonetheless.

The tom-cat seemed pleased with the fact that he let him in charge. Who else was going to take charge anyway? It wasn’t like he was up for taking the leader position, he just didn’t have it in him to take charge. He was one to follow, as long as the other cat was just being normal about it. As soon as the other cat would ask him something utterly ridiculous he would sure as hell say something about it. This was probably the same reason as well why he wasn’t put in charge for any patrol, as good as he can follow, leading just wasn’t his thing. He was a good hunter, no point in proving that, but patrols.. Some cats wanted to chat during those, while he just wanted to get the damn job done and get back to hunting or whatever task he could manage to do on his own.
The road to the burnt sycamore was quiet, as expected. Neither of the tom-cats seemed to be wanting to talk, which was completely fine. He wasn’t looking for a conversation anyway. With his mouth slightly open he scanned the area, his stormy blue eyes looking around for anything that seemed wrong. The black tom looked at him with his amber eyes, his tail pointing towards the direction of the thunderpath if he wasn’t mistaken. ”You smell that too?” the black tom asked him, to which he nodded. The faint scent of ThunderClan was in the air, drifted to them by the wind. This could either mean a patrol had been there to mark their borders on their own side, or the fact that another clancat has been on their territory. ”Yea, ThunderClan. Might be becus’ of the wind, but ‘m not takin’ any chances.” he said with a calm tone. Even if they were gone now, still better to check it out before anything would happen.
